Hi Truthies! Gonna try to update this page more, since we seem to be getting more and more news, these days. Here is what's going on:
Sorry for the delay in updating this site, Truthies. Lots of stuff going on in my personal life, so I've just been focusing on updating the fan site Twitters since it's quicker, but not so much here. Since "Expedition Unknown" is still filming and I assume Josh's wedding is coming up soon, there isn't much new stuff to report anyway, so stick by here or the Twitter account HERE for any news :)
It looks, from the likes of Josh's recent tweets from overseas that filming has begun for "Expedition Unknown", his new show on the Travel Channel. For those who don't know, Syfy's "DT" was canceled and this will be the new show we get in it's place. For all the info we have on the show, so far, click HERE for the previous blog update.
UNRELATED NEWS: If you are a "Walking Dead" fan who wants to interact with other fans, especially if you are from the New England area, click HERE to learn about Walker Stalker Cons, a series of fan conventions created by fellow Truthies James and Eric, and a casting call for WSC Boston attendees. I also wanted to apologize for not being active in updates the last couple of weeks. My lovely friend Stephanie Picher passed away and I admit, it is hard to cope with. She was a fellow fan culture lover, always wanted to hear my stories about Josh Gates, and was just a very good friend. If you'd like to see a memorial film I made of her, click HERE. RIP, Steph.
After the sad announcement that "DT" was canceled last week, we were rewarded with some amazing news yesterday! Josh announced that he will not only be working with the Travel Channel now, but that he will be hosting a brand new series called "Expedition Unknown"! Here is what we know and what we don't know yet:
In January of 2012, I sat down to a private brunch with Josh Gates, as his fan ambassador, in Los Angeles. We talked about many things. I remember him speaking about his career, and saying to me "Someday, DT will be canceled. It's an inevitability." I scoffed, smiled and said "of course". A little over two years later and we finally get the announcement, from Josh himself, that DT is done (read his heartfelt statement HERE).
I was expecting this day to come, but I would be lying if I said I didn't have a lump in my throat the size of Texas and I was holding back tears in a Starbucks right now. 2014 has been a year of a lot of changes for me, so I suppose finally getting an answer about our favorite show not being continued concretes these changes for me. We finally get to mourn no new episodes of DT, but I advise my fellow fans to only be sad for a brief moment, if you can. First, we have five season of episodes to hang onto. HOURS of crappy food, bad vehicles, smart aleck humor, and mysteries. You can also add to it all the "Ghost Hunters" specials and episodes Josh was part of. Second, Josh isn't going anywhere, or any of the other cast members. They all will have other projects to do and for us to follow. Finally, and most importantly, the end of DT and all we have left of it, including Josh's inspiring book, should be a catalyst for you to adopt Josh's message of travel changing your life.
Without Josh, I never would have made myself learn to build websites, to use social media platforms, to continue to have a reason to travel by myself far distances long after college had ended, especially when it meant reaching an unfamiliar destination where people I knew weren't just waiting there for me. I have made so many unbelievable friends in doing this fan work who live all over the country and have crossed so much off of my life's bucket list. I finally visited another country. I got to attend San Diego Comic Con, and on a free press pass for doing his fan work, which was crazy. I even met, what I feel to be, the love of my life at one of his meet ups I coordinated, and we are still together today. His words of inspiration, either personally to me or from his book or his tweets, are getting me through a period of adjustment in my life, too, which I am also grateful for.
Through all of it, I look forward to Josh's and the other cast member's futures outside of DT because I've seen the way they treat fans and know they won't want to disappear from the public eye for fear of losing them. Especially Josh, who has NEVER been too busy for any fan. So I will definitely share a Josh quote that he would want me to say to you guys - "Go Away. Often."
What is going on in the Destination Truth universe:
Quick update for you guys:
To my fellow Truthies aka "Destination Truth" fans -
It is no secret that our beloved show has been off the air for a very long time now. Though we get re-runs and many places around the world are now having access to episodes they have never seen before, as well as some seasons available on Netflix, Team Truth guided by Josh Gates has not, to our knowledge, been on or recorded any new adventures. As fan ambassador, I have personally tried to help put a bug in the ear of Syfy by doing everything from making a petition (by the way, petitionsare useless in saving TV shows since people can fabricate signatures and 2k people signing something is not enough to bring back a TV show), and I have even approached Syfy's President of Programming at the time while at an event in NYC to express how much people still loved the show.
Despite the crowds that Josh Gates and other cast members, like Erin Ryder, pull in at conventions, plus the viewer numbers the show has gotten in the past, "DT" has been in a perpetual state of hiatus. If the show has been canceled, either Josh Gates has not been informed, or he has and has been told that he will not be allowed to be the first person to tell anyone about it on a public platform. You can see some of the proof I have to support my hype of the show within this paragraph HERE.
If we measure the numbers from Season 4 through Season 5, the minimum 0.726 Million to over a Million viewers per premiere episode do not appear to be worth informing us if our show is ever coming back. The Syfy network was quick to kill their 2013 reality show "Fangasm" by steadily moving each premiere episode to a later time slot, then combining the last two episodes of the now only surviving season to one night and airing it after midnight.
I understand your frustrations. As fan ambassador since 2008 and having a pretty close but professional relationship, even as just a fan and non-Syfy employee, with some of the cast members, including Josh, I have been a fellow hardcore fan of the show. I have a hard time understanding why it is so hard to make a decision about "DT", or to at least tell the fans. Josh has obviously been a mainstay of the network for years, so perhaps they fear telling us anything until they decide what to do with his fate. I have had private conversations in the past with certain parties about potential Josh projects I am hopeful come to light, and I have even publicly tweeted the idea of a highlight special in the kin of ones done for "Ghost Hunters", as well as Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures", but no dice.
Regardless, I too hope that 2014 will be the year we can either be excited about new episodes, or get to properly mourn "DT"s announced death. As devoted viewers, we should get as much. Also, if it has not been made clear already, please do not harass or guilt Josh Gates about when the show is coming back. It is not within his control, as the show is funded and aired by Syfy through NBC/Universal.
Sincerest wishes for a happy new year - Amanda. Fan site admin, runner of @DTonSyfyFans on Twitter and "DT" fan ambassador
Hi guys. Sorry again for the gap in updates. Personal life, work, blah blah blah. I do want to let you guys know that I do a lot of stuff over on my Twitter page, which is getting close to 15k followers. I will try to be more consistent on here. Anyway, here is what's going on:
