NOTE - as of 5/2/16, we have reached the cut off point for selling paper copies of the "Fan Guide to Destination Truth". Thanks so much to everyone who bought a collectible paper copy and if you didn't get one yet, be sure to keep checking back when the eBook will be available!
Hi guys. Amanda here. There have been a few questions, and some general confusion, about the "Fan Guide to DT" that I'm selling on this site, with partial proceeds to a charity run by DT cast member Shawn Goodwin (click here to see how to buy it). Since there are only re-runs on of "EXU" tonight, I figured it would be okay if I dedicated today's post answering some of those Qs here: Q: Is this book for all ages AKA a family friendly read? A: Yes! Any cuss words quoted from the show or in interviews will be censored, plus there aren't any scary photos that will freak out kids. There are some graphics of creatures that look a little creepy, but I don't believe they will scare anyone. Q: Is this book completely about interviews with fans of "DT" and Josh Gates? I want to read a book about the show and not only about my fellow fans. A: A very small portion of the book is about the fans - after all, it is a fan guide! However, a larger majority of the book is about episode reviews (no spoilers - explained in a separate post) and the rest is made up of cast interviews. These interviews are great because a lot of them answer fan Qs that aren't addressed in Josh's book (especially with a big portion of the book focusing on fellow crew members and lists like experts on DT, etc.), and it's a succinct way to answer some popular fan Qs rather than replying to everyone on social media when they are seen. Only so much time in the day ;-) Q: Why can't you do in-depth reviews of the episodes, including spoilers? A: Under Fair Use in terms of copyright laws, I can do a book about this television show because I am merely commenting on it through curating old interviews, speaking to other fans, sharing personal stories, and doing a brush-over of what each episode is about. While there are blogs and journalists who can post spoilers online for TV shows and movies to bring in an audience and revenue, these are common sites that you do not pay to visit (you pay for the internet, but you are not paying for the exclusivity to get their news - they get money from ads on the sites you visit and corporations who run their publications). I'm selling a product based completely around a television show that you can still watch re-runs of on a paid-network channel, as well as purchase digital copies of on iTunes or Amazon. If I do anything to spoil these episodes and make it so that fans don't feel the need to go back and watch those re-runs or buy those episodes (which we know is not the case, since we LOVE the show, but in a legal sense, this could be said of me, if I were to spoil episodes in this book), I could get in trouble. I am just trying to achieve a dream of publishing a book and I know there are a lot of unanswered questions from the show that fans have - why not kill two birds with one stone? Q: Are you just trying to do this for your own ego and to make lots of money? A: Nope. I've actually gone many years with people visiting this site, the social media pages and the corresponding media channels, and never knowing who runs these pages, and I accept that. I primarily do this so fans can get info and resources, as well as communicate with public figures associated with these projects, and I expect the same thing when I visit a fan site of my own interests. I actually co-wrote this book with another fan, who also has a dream to publish a book, plus there is a whole chapter with interviews with fellow fans, so they can tell their stories about why DT and related subjects means so much to them. I also wanted to make sure the crew who worked alongside Josh were all highlighted, too. As far as making a lot of money off of this? There is so much overhead with making a book independently that we will be lucky to make any kind of profit, and it's certainly not enough so we can quit our jobs - it's not even enough money to pay our rent for a month, so I just wanted to say that really quick. Q: Can you show a sample of what the book will look like? A: The book is still being proofread and edited, so this is a bit basic, but here is a good sample (click each to view larger):
