Day 5 - Old Friends & Surprise Celeb Encounters

9/4/2010

I slipped past the crowd of people waiting to eat in the Cafe and took a photo of what Christiane and I had dubbed the Josh Gates booth, as there was a giant poster/stickup on the wall of him over it. I snapped a photo and then noticed some bright red hair in the shot. When I looked harder, I noticed it was not only Danny ("DT" production coordinator) sitting there, but it was also Allison Scagliotti of "Warehouse 13"! I didn't want to disturb their meal, but I figured since I just saw Allison yesterday and Danny was familiar with me, as long as I was (as always) respectful, they wouldn't mind if I said hi.

On Sunday, I woke up early so that I could finish getting my things together. It was rough getting to sleep the night before because of my massive migraine and my depression that the trip was now dying down. I finished packing and went to grab some breakfast to go. Once I was done, Christiane and I loaded up the car and got ready to enjoy our last day. It was, as per usual, cloudy and gross out at the start, and in the car, we both decided to improvise and part ways for the day until it was time for the drive to the airport.

Though it was the last day, I was majorly excited for Sunday because I planned on looking around for souvenirs that day and I knew I was going to get to meet my amazing friend, Bryan, who I hadn't seen in about 3 years. I went to go meet him near the No Ordinary Family stand and I was so insanely happy to see him, and to meet my new awesome friend, Chelsey, who was with him. They both drove all the way from LA, slept in their car then waited since 4:30 in the morning in line to get into the Smallville panel, which meant a lot to them since the finale season will be aired soon.

Once we looked around for stuff to buy, we walked outside to find that it was suddenly gorgeous out. The sun was shining and we walked through the crowd of people, and promotional Walking Dead zombies, to go have a filling lunch at The Spaghetti Factory. We were all exhausted and just laughing at everything, but eventually had to part ways. I could feel the adrenaline dying down and was starting to get pretty sad, I must admit. I decided, since I was in the GasLamp, that I would go to the Cafe Diem one last time to get pictures and maybe grab a snack for the car ride to the airport.

I reluctantly headed over to the table, waved hi to Danny and he enthusiastically said hi back.

I turned my attention to Allison and said "I hope you don't mind, but I wanted a picture yesterday-" and she pointed a finger at me saying "I remember you from the Warehouse 13 press room yesterday!" I smiled and nodded. I asked if it was okay to take a photo with her and she said of course. I expected the, no offense, but typical pose with a celebrity to occur with a shoulder around someone. Instead, she insisted I come sit down with her in the booth and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. I was taken aback by her friendliness, but I eventually accepted the gesture and made a stupid duck-face into the camera. I admit, I have somewhat of a girl crush on Scags (as well as Kris from "Ghost Hunters"), so that was a cool moment!

They asked me if I'd like to sit and I said as long as they didn't mind, but let them know I ate already, so I wouldn't impose on them for long. I asked Danny if Josh had gone home yet and he chuckled. "Actually, he's heading down here in a bit." I was a little giddy, but I also felt nervous. I didn't want the poor guy to think I was stalking him - I was just concerned if he got home alright, as I'm sure he celebrated hard the night before at the Syfy/EW party. Danny said Josh probably wouldn't be in the mood for pictures and I told him I would never disrespect his privacy like that and wasn't interested in shoving a camera in his face. Danny smiled and agreed while some fans who spotted Allison asked to take pictures with her. I also took a photo with Danny, since I didn't get to do so the day of the Friday meet and greet.

Danny, upon sitting, pointed towards the door, where I saw Josh and Kris coming in. I joked around and said to Josh "oh geez, you're following me now!" but immediately felt awkward. He allowed Kris to slip into the booth and then he sat down, waving at me feebly. I asked how he was and he slunk down dramatically on booth. I chuckled and he said "why do I do this to myself? EVERY Syfy party, I overdo it, Amanda." I giggled and said, "you love it, don't lie." We spoke briefly a little, he asking me what I was up to today. I told him I got to see my friend Bryan after a long time not and he said that was great. Josh asked everyone at the table if he looked okay, as he used some face cream he picked up in a far away country that supposedly takes 10 years off your face. Everyone joked with him and he quickly put his Ray Bans back on.

Kris spotted the Syfy photo booth in the back and asked Josh if he wanted to take a photo in it. He said he would and they both went off to take a photo. I turned to Danny and Allison and said it was great seeing them, but I was going to go say "bye" to Kris and Josh because I had to get to the airport in a few hours. Allison said it was once again nice to meet me, and she commented that she liked my zombie bag. I told her she could have it if she wanted and she giggled, saying "oh my God, no, you bought it, it's yours. Thank you though!" Danny said he'd probably be down in a moment and I headed towards the photo booth.

Kris and Josh posed for some hilarious shots with the "Ghost Hunters" themed photo booth pictures and I asked permission if it was okay to shoot video while they did so. They said it was no problem, but I still didn't want to take too much video or photos that day because it was a nice private moment I lucked into and I didn't want to take advantage of it.

I asked Josh if he would mind taking a photo with me in the booth and he said not at all. I got in with him and said "okay, let's do the 'you're hungover' and 'Amanda still has a migraine' faces." He chuckled, we got into "character" and took our shot. The guy in the booth said I had one more shot by myself and I took a joke shot that I quickly regretted. It was very unflattering and when it popped out, Josh said I looked like Slimer from "Ghost Busters". The guy running the booth added insult to injury by saying that photo would be everywhere - Josh and Kris got a good laugh at my expense, but it was still pretty funny.

Josh asked me how I was getting home and when I was going back. I told him I had a red eye flight with JetBlue. He asked me if it was out of Long Beach and I replied yes. He cringed and said it sucked because I wouldn't get home until later for various reasons. I figure, if anyone knows about the best and worst ways to travel, he would. I rolled my eyes and said "don't tell me that" and he laughed, saying he can't lie to me.

I was starting to feel really awkward sticking around, so I told them that I would get going, but thanked them. I hugged Danny, who made his way over, then Kris, and finally, Josh gave me a quick hug, wishing me a safe flight. I told him to feel better and made my way out of the Cafe Diem. I was very giddy with excitement and thought that was a great end of the day. I called Christiane to see if she was ready to go and she asked me a favor. She said she had swag tickets from her panels that day and asked me to get them for her. I told her I gladly would.

I went to go find her in the Sails Pavilion, where she was waiting in line to renew her pass for next year. I got her tickets and hightailed it over to the hotel they were giving out this swag at. Before reaching the room with the trinkets, I was on the phone with a friend from home and I looked up from my call for a moment internally freaked out - it was Morgan Spurlock walking into the hallway! I loved his film Supersize Me, as well as his series 30 Days, and I had to go meet him! I rudely hung up on my friend (I did call her back later) and went over to the film maker.

I went up to Morgan and said "excuse me, Mr. Spurlock, but may I please have a photo?" He smiled and said of course. We made idle chatter and I added that I loved SSM. He chuckled, said thank you and was on his way. I was ecstatic, but remembered I needed to get Christiane's stuff, so I ran into the room, grabbed her prizes and scrambled to get back to Sails. She called me and asked if I could buy her a pretzel and some water for the long ride to the airport, and with all she did for me for the trip and the long drive ahead of us, it was the least I could do.

I bought her the food and waited in the lobby for her, thankfully sitting down because I was a little tired, since the adrenaline was definitely wearing off. She finally found me, we used the restroom and got in the car. It was a pretty peaceful drive to the airport, but we had an incident in the drop off area once arriving and when I was finally in the airport, I checked in only to find out that my flight was delayed from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.! It was fine, though, because I researched airports ahead of time in case I would be stuck overnight in one (good intuition, I guess), and the Long Beach airport was very quiet AND had free Wifi so I could do updates/editing before boarding.

I finally boarded my flight a little after midnight, was in the very last seat at the back of the plane near the crapper and didn't really sleep at all, but I had an amazing time at Comic Con. I'd also, on a similar note, like to thank my friend Julian for my JetBlue Buddy Pass for my ride home. Thanks for reading my write-ups (or reading my future ones, since I'm sure i published these out of order) and sharing the experience with me :)
