Chasing Legends Inspired By Josh Gates

Josh Gates fan Nash Hoover, like all of us, became enamored by the adventures presented by our favorite TV show host. But he took it one step further by pursuing his own program called "Chasing Legends"! Read more about his inspiring story below:

"I first became a fan back when Destination Truth was on the air," Nash told Singularity Fan Pages. "I feel in love with it instantly and still enjoy re-watching reruns to this day."

Josh's sense of humor and genuine love for adventure meshed with story-telling kept Nash tuned in for years to come.

"His spirit of adventure, passion for travel, and thirst for solving mysteries - all of the above makes me a fan," Nash stated. "I definitely love the supernatural/cryptozoologic episodes, but the historical/treasure hunting cases are still fascinating to watch and learn about."

This is where his passion project comes into play. Since 2013, Nash has been developing and working on his own series called "Chasing Legends."

"The show takes heavy inspiration from Destination Truth," Nash reveals. "Myself and a small team research and investigate cryptid legends around the globe."

Nash is launching a Kickstarter campaign on March 31st, 2020 to help fund the filming of their first full season. Stay tuned to @DTonSYFYfans on Twitter for when that link is available to show your support!

1.7.15 Reddit Q&A

Text transcript from Michelle (edited by Amanda) from Josh's Reddit Q&A:
  • from JediJav91 "What was the most creepiest thing you experienced on Destination Truth beside the creepy ass doll island?" Josh -"Spending the night at Chernobyl is probably top of the list. Worst. Idea. Ever."
  • from Krustic13 "In Expedition Unknown will we see working cars, airplanes, and boats? Part of me hopes not. It was part of the magic in DT." Josh - "I can personally assure you that the global fleet of craptastic vehicles will continue in Expedition Unknown."
  • from Angermoen "Destination Truth had a lot of humorous moments but what's one time that you were really, truly scared?" Josh - "Every time Ryder rented me a car."
  • from Ednemo13 "I loved your book and laughed out loud about "Whore Dice". As I was in the hospital at the time, my wife got the honor of reading this to me while I was horizontal. My question is: Did you do all the writing in the book? (Which was very funny and well done). And Do you have any plans for another book?" Josh - "I did write the book! Every word....Unless you hated it, in which case, it was ghost written by M Night Shyamalan. It turns out that when you're trying to write a book, it's easy to spend a lot of time procrastinating on the internet. Like. A lot of time. I've seen every YouTube video. All of them. ALL OF THEM. My girlfriend had to drive me all the way from Los Angeles to Santa Fe and back while I typed on my laptop just to finish the first draft."
  • from Jemmani "What is the worst thing you have eaten? And what is the worst? Thanks for all the good work, you entertain and educate in a great way!" Josh - "Balut. It’s…well…it’s the grossest food on earth. Don’t believe me? Ok. Here’s the menu description. It’s an overdeveloped duck egg that’s boiled and eaten in it’s shell. It’s like eating an egg, but inside, there’s feathers…soft bones…a beak. A BEAK. Hide your kids. Brace yourself (link to image of Balut provided by Josh) It’s the only food I’ve ever eaten on camera that I then immediately threw up."
  • from Andytheg "I loved Destination Truth and thanks to Hulu+ I was able to watch every single episode so I can't wait for Expedition Unknown! What was the most meaningful expedition you had on Destination Truth, the one that you still think back on most fondly or maybe with the most fear?" Josh - "For me, the most meaningful was probably our trip to remote corners of Antarctica. It was like going to the moon - something I never dreamed I'd have the opportunity to do and one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful places on earth. Magnificent desolation."
  • from Wafflesnsyrup "How can I get a job like yours? Also: swoon." Josh - "There aren't a lot of openings for "Professional Mystery and Monster Hunter and part-time Ghostologist," but the fact is, I got my job by becoming passionate about travel. Get a passport and get out there. Travel always leads to totally unexpected friendships, experiences, and connections. Opportunities for employment will follow. Trust me."
  • from Beckettfan03 "Hi Josh!! Can't wait for the new show! Me and my dad will be watching!! Here's a few questions!! I've investigated many places and my top 2 are waverly hills and Sloss furnace. Have you done any "truthing" at those places and did you find anything? I've asked you this in person but you were very vague... Did you get the analysis back to know if that was a unicorn or not? I've experienced a lot of activity on a case once and it has stuck with me ever since. Any case that has truly stayed with you? Any chance on a return trip to the island of the dolls? Thanks for doing this!! Hope to meet up with you again soon!!" Josh - "We're looking at 100% unicorn."
  • from Pronouncedspenco "Josh, when is the next time you'll be in or around Maryland, or D.C.? Definitely hoping to get an autograph. Also, if you were a yogurt, would you be fruit on the bottom, or stirred?" Josh - Going to be in D.C. for the Travel & Adventure Show on March 7th. Hope to see you there! (link to events Josh will be at) And....stirred?
  • Minerva8918 "I didn't know this was a thing! I'll be there! Thanks for the heads up!" Josh "Thanks! You'll recognize me because I will open by asking you that question again, and by my kind eyes."
  • HandofGod02 "Nice Bio-Dome ref lol" Josh "Yes! Hoping someone would get it."
  • RustyDarkstar76 "What's up with bigfoot? Can we actually get down to a real hunt for him, using tech and dogs?" Josh "What IS up with bigfoot? Seriously.
  • Phazeiserotic "How crazy was it getting spooked in Antarctica? And what do you think of those crazy Bigfooters who are about to launch a blimp over the wilderness to find the beast?" Josh "Bliiiimp. Why didn't I think of that? Come on, Gates. Get in the game."
  • PSlimitation "Have you ever explored the illuminati?" Josh "(*shuts drapes...rips phone cord out of the wall) What a weird question. The Illuminati aren't a thing. They aren't listening. They aren't everywhere. So. Let's all just cool out. Because, again, the Illuminati aren't a thing."
  • Rabid_chocobo "I'll be the first one to ask - Would you rather fight a Horse-sized duck, or 100 Duck-sized horses? Please answer this, it is important to Reddit." Josh "100 duck sized horses. All day long. Period. End of story."

Coast to Coast AM

on January 4th, Josh was on a podcast Coast to Coast AM. Michelle was kind enough to do a transcript:

Notes from Coast to Coast AM - 1/4/2015 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.

There will be 12 episodes
Lost City in the Jungle of Cambodia
Mayan underworld in Mexico
World's Most Valuable Art Work (WWII)
Captain Morgan's Lost Flag Ship near Panama

[Paraphrased Q & A]
  1. Will - Johnson City, TN: Curious about the Island of the Dolls- what was your feeling on the paranormal part of the Doll Island? Josh-Mike the sound guy came totally unglued. Heard a noise, though he saw something, went bananas and broke equipment on his way out of the shed in his flight response. Really creepy things were happening there.
  2. Kevin - Bellingham, WA: Any developments on the Ark of the Covenant? Josh-Something we looked into, part of the problem is there are a lot of dead ends with stone doors in front of them. We have no access to these places. Not enough on the story. We don't want to rehash what people did before. Maybe in the future we can look at it.
  3. On the differences between EU and DT: Josh- At it's core, it's about adventures. Every story is just really cool. Sometimes they have a dark edge to them and that makes them more interesting. I'm like a kid in a candy store.
  4. Q- Are you focusing on more historical mysteries? Josh- yes we are. The frustrating thing about DT was forcing half hour content. You'll learn more about the back story of a legend or mystery
  5. Q- Any past compatriots on EU? Josh- On folks from DT, it has been asked a lot. Like Ryder who is my girl Friday, we'd love to have it happen in the future. So stay tuned!
  6. Hunter- from SC: What destinations will you be going to this year? Josh- Viking Sunstone. Vikings were great at navigation and the legendary Sunstone helped them do that. We'll be going to Norway to investigate. Also traveling to Myanmar (Burma). We're looking for a massive golden bell that was stolen from a Pagoda in a river.
  7. Coleen- Rockland CA: Have you kept up with the Lagina brothers with their Oak Island pit? Josh- With a show devoted to it, I will keep following it, but we won't be delving into it ourselves.

Thanks Michelle!

here are some extra fan questions that weren't addressed on the recent DT fan radio:
-what Destination Truth adventure would you love to relive?
There are so many (and a few I'd never want to relive). For me, our trip to Egypt was particularly magical. The experience of spending the night in Tut's tomb...what an experience. I'd love to go back!

-what locations would you like to visit if Destination Truth is renewed?
Tibet. Myanmar. More locations in the Pacific islands. Uganda. And on and on and on....

-will you return to New England for any signings or fan meet ups ever?
Yes! I'd love to. I'm working with my events manager on setting up appearances throughout the year. I'm doing a theatre event in Rhode Island this summer which I'm really excited about. Really hopeful to do other events in New England as well.

"DT" Summary & Show Bio

6/12/2012

As part of the WormHole Riders Team covering "Destination Truth" (DT WormHole page HERE), I wanted to post the pieces I write and that my team member for the page Holly Wilson makes as plain-text posts. Here is the first post from that page that serves as a summary of "DT" so far that I wrote (original story link):
It has been a long time coming, but with Season 5 hovering in the nearby future, here we are. To those not familiar with Destination Truth, here are the cliff notes on your crash course of this Original Syfy series.

Destination Truth began as a pitch on what to match up with Ghost Hunters on what was then the SciFi Channel in the late 2000's. Neil Mandt of Mandt Brothers Productions concocted the idea of DT, shot the pilot and presented it to the network. They were not a fan of the end product. MORE AFTER PAGE BREAK

But wait, you say - why is there a DT if they hated the pilot?! Well, the network liked the idea of a show that focused on monster hunting, for lack of a better term, but they wanted a different host or central person of interest on the show via a formal casting for the second try. It was then Neil remembered his old friend through a reality show he shot a few years prior.

Josh Gates, who was already an experienced traveler, was at first just as skeptical as the network about this television show. "I was overseas with a couple buddies of mine in Africa," Gates reminisced on a 2009 episode of DT Fan Radio on BlogTalkRadio. "I had planned this big trip to go climb Kilimanjaro…I’m in the middle of Tanzania and I get this email from Neil in Los Angeles that says 'come home, I have a great job opportunity for you.' I was like…it’s LA, people say things like that, right?"

To make a long story short, Gates came back from his Kilimanjaro climb where he avoided death, which he talks about in more detail in his book Memoirs of a Monster Hunter, and went to his casting interview in his dirty travel clothes with a full shaggy beard, via Neil's request. Due to his colorful history of travel and his educational background in not only science but acting, he was brought on for a DT do-over. Five seasons and five years later, as well as part of a new production company Ping Pong Productions, Gates is a staple of the Syfy Channel with not only DT, but his hosting duties for Ghost Hunters Live specials and his moderating gigs for Syfy panels at San Diego Comic Con.

Now we will get down to the main point - what is DT about? Essentially, Gates and his compact crew of under ten people travel the world, and as of Season Three due to fan feedback, within the United States, looking to shed light on mysteries plaguing locals of that region.

The cases Team Truth takes on range from cryptids, or really weird creatures that have not been proven to exist in science yet, to odd phenomena such as The Bermuda Triangle, and then there are the stand-by ghost investigations. Not to be confused with Ghost Hunters, DT does not respond to cases based on urgency of hauntings and a much more skeptical, scientific approach is taken on the show when compared to paranormal TV peers.

Above all, the two reasons the show is such an undeniable Syfy darling are due to the travel destinations featured and humor components, more often than not the product of Gates' witty sense of humor at the expense of his crew members or whacky locals. Again, potential new fans of DT should not mistake Gates poking fun at locals in an international place of origin as racism or making light of their culture.

"I think that those claims are unfair," Gates said in defense of the program during a 2009 press conference. "People sometimes look at other cultures around the world and…they get this idea that you can't have fun with or fool around with people in the developing nations or people in other cultures because it’s somehow insensitive."

"That’s always been really important to me is you have to have a respect for the cultures that you’re going to," Gates continues. "What you also find is that people all over the world have a great sense of humor."

Where has DT been? Team Truth has investigated in Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Siberia, Nepal, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Africa, and the list goes on. Some monumental cases they have taken part in have been investigating overnight in King Tut's Tomb, conducting the first underwater paranormal investigation of Truk Lagoon, and perhaps the most recognizable of all would be their shudder-inducing exploration of Chernobyl, where the entire city of Pripyat was cleared out after a fatal Nuclear incident in 1986 that still lays abandoned.

The biggest piece of evidence collected on DT to date has been what is described as a Yeti footprint from the Himalayas in the first episode of Season Two. Granted, the fact that the artifact now lays on display on line in a Disney ride waiting area should still not take away from the magnitude of how important the discovery was and still is for the show, and the field of cryptozoology.

Another likable quality about DT is that the show is completely interactive. The viewer gets to feel like they're on the ride, from the horrible rental vehicles to the medical mishaps and the chilling moments where something lurks in the woods, eliciting Josh's unofficial catchphrase "What the [censored] was that?!"

The viewer also feels like they are part of the journey because DT, much like Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures, displays all people working behind the scenes AKA the entire small team on the show and not just main investigators. Fan favorites within the crew of Team Truth have gained recognition to the point where it has lead to their own fandoms, or even leading to other TV projects. Jael de Pardo of Season Three has become a lead investigator on another Syfy show called Fact or Faked, and recently Erin Ryder of multiple seasons has announced she will be on NatGeo's Chasing UFO's, though she will still be appearing in upcoming Season Five.

What is the travel itinerary for Season Five, out on July 10th after an over year-long hiatus? Team Truth will present a UFO case from Kazakhstan, they will return to Romania to investigate a haunted forest in which a prior team member was hurled in the air via a mysterious force, as well as cases in Fiji, Vietnam and Tikal, among other locations.

If you want to gain more knowledge of DT and the host Josh Gates before July 10th, you can follow him on Twitter, visit the official Syfy site for Destination Truth, buy his aforementioned book Memoirs of a Monster Hunter, or visit the show's fan-run fan site where you can check out opportunities to get in touch with the show's cast and fellow fans known as Truthies. You can also check out Josh on Syfy's Insane or Inspired airing Friday nights.

Your WHR sherpas to the world of DT will be Amanda Rosenblatt @DTonSYFYfans and Holly Wilson @hwilson2009

The Life of a "DT" Crew Member

An Article by Amanda Rosenblatt

You know the saying "the hardest working person in show business"? Aside from the fact that you can't distinguish one single person who works the hardest, it would be safe to say that the crew of the Syfy series "Destination Truth" are without a doubt among an elite few of the hardest working people in reality television.

When speaking to several cast members of the past two years for this show, particularly from the three in this article, there is a general consensus for being employed with this particular production. It's 24/7, it's difficult, it doesn't provide for the best smelling surroundings, and you rarely can digest food for months, but it's the best experience any of the cast members have ever had in their entire lives.

Homemade captions for this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlgH39p4EuU

Hi, my name is Joshua Gates, I am 24 years old, I live in Los Angeles California, and I am applying to be a contestant on ESPN's "Beg Borrow and BS [bullsh*t]".

Rather than tell you why I would be a great contestant for your show, I'm gonna try and show you. I'm gonna attempt to BS my way into Walt Disneyland here in Anaheim California, which is notorious for having very tight security, so wish me luck!

(a conversation ensues between Josh and the greeter/ticket taker where Josh says he left his brother's inhaler in a Main Street Disney restaurant. it doesn't look like Josh is getting in without a ticket until he says that his brother is having an asthma attack right now in the parking garage and he is reluctantly let in as long as he comes right back to check in with him)
